Motivate Your Students Using Video


 


Students today are spending their time watching tv and playing video games, so why not appeal to them in their world by using video in the classroom!


 


Two programs available to teachers in Columbia County allow teachers and students to create videos.  PhotoStory, a free download from Microsoft.com, using still photographs and gives them motion to create a video.  Music, text, and effects can be added to the photographs.  This can be saved as a Windows Media Video file(.wmv) so that it can be shared with anyone.  Another option, Windows Movie Maker, comes preinstalled on Windows based computers.  This software allows you to actually edit video files, unlike PhotoStory.  Video and still images can both be enter into this program.  Then add some music and effects to jazz up your video.  Also, adding titles and credits to your movie is easily done with Movie Maker

Some of the concerns that educators have had in the past have now been addressed so there is no reason not to use this great tool. Safety is a concern for many especially with younger students. Several blog hosts now give teachers control of their blog. David Warlick, a pioneer in blogging, has created a site specifically for classrooms called Class Blogmeister. This is my recommendation for the classroom.
Another site created by educators for educators is EduBlogs. This site required a studentemail address to sign up, though.
